A beautiful European train journey has captured the attention of thousands on the Internet after they realised just how scenic it is. Starting in Tirano, the pretty little Italian town on the border of Switzerland, the train trundles along some of Europe’s most spectacular natural scenery before it finally pulls up for good in the luxury resort of St. Moritz.

The railway crosses the Alps, meaning you’ll be negotiating dramatic terrain, while looking out the window at the rugged mountain landscapes. As well as the heights, the train whizzes through a stunning 55 tunnels and 196 bridges – meaning you really get to sample some of the world’s great engineering feats.

Along the way, you’ll pass over the 65-metre-high Landwasser Viaduct, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Constructed in 1901, the bridge is 316 metres long, meaning it feels like you are floating through the air for quite some time.

One of the most famous sections of the route is the Montebello Curve, when the train cuts around in a horseshoe style, leaving a spectacular view of the Bernina Massif, a huge opening in the mountains from where you’ve just come from. In the view you can see the Morteratsch Glacier, which is the third-largest glacier in the Eastern Alps.

You can also see three stunning lakes – Pitschen, Nair and Bianco – and the Brusio spiral viaduct, which is a single-track nine-arched stone spiral structure, considered to be one of the architectural highlights of the whole journey.

Eventually, at the end of the four-hour journey, you’ll pull up in the gorgeous luxury mountain resort of St. Moritz in Switzerland. The town is notorious for its wealthy visitors who line their supercars along the pavements of the mountains. George Clooney, Kate Moss and Princess Kate are all thought to have visited.

The town has twice hosted the Winter Olympics and is a great place to enjoy a touch of skiing. The resort is home to a range of slopes, meaning all abilities will be catered for. If you’re there in the summer, then you can enjoy some brilliant sunny hikes. All the chairlifts work during the sunny season, so you can get just about anywhere on the mountains.
