More than 15 million British tourists travelled to Spain in 2022, making the Mediterranean hotspot a leading holiday destination for sun-starved Brits.

But while the Costa del Sol and Barcelona might be well-trodden ground, there’s still plenty of more secret spots worth exploring.

The expert team at ABTA have shared their top destinations to watch in 2024 and one of Spain’s most enchanting “undiscovered gems” has made the list.

Extremadura, a western region that borders Portugal, has been recognised for its diverse range of attractions.

An ABTA spokesperson said: “The Spanish region of Extremadura is a largely undiscovered gem, home to three UNESCO world heritage sites and some of the country’s most attractive, historic cities.”

‌ABTA recommends British tourists kick off their trip in Merida, the capital of Extremadura. The little-known destination has extensive and well-preserved Roman ruins.

In nearby Cáceres, tourists can explore the city’s medieval centre which dates back to the 1500s and is largely intact.

Trujillo is also incredibly well-preserved with a huge number of churches and upmarket houses to explore.

Extremadura also has breathtaking natural beauty with largely unspoilt landscapes, with the Jerte Valley a must-see.

A foodie destination, Brits shouldn’t leave without trying the region’s special pimento dishes, a type of smoked paprika flavouring.

The region is also famous for pork with ham produced from the ‘pata negra’, or little black pigs, which live on Extremadura’s acorns.

‌With Sunshine Saturday, historically one of the travel industry’s busiest booking days, just around the corner on January 6, now is a great time to start planning this year’s holiday.

Other destinations to top ABTA’s hotlist include budget hotspot Albania and Greece’s largest island, Crete.

Tourists planning a long-haul break might want to try Aruba, Zambia or Mauritius, some of this year’s most exciting destinations to watch.
